Saturday's colonial pit dig

Got an invite from my buddy Stan to join him on a pit dig at one of his favorite sites, and one where I've been invited to before as well. Some great early bottle seals have come out of this spot, and we brought our sifters to make sure none of them escaped our eyeballs. But even though we were into plenty of early glass and pottery, and that seals had previously been found right next to the holes we were digging, it was not to be. Ended up with quite a few blown early black glass bottle spouts, a bunch of pipe stems and a couple of bowls, and some pottery and other assorted finds. After digging for several hours and reluctantly filling in our huge holes, we did a little of detecting in the adjacent field for an hour or so. Although we didn't make any killer finds, I had a great time and look forward to giving it a try again soon.

I love doing that! It's true sometimes it can be thin, and I just use my detector no sifter, but what a rush getting a good signal at 3 feet!

That dig was a Colonial success. I bet that complete 17th century buckle had you excited. That site has huge potential and I would be in Colonial heaven digging that pit littered with Westerwald pottery and black glass. That is my kind of site, Bill.

Kirk :hello:

It wasn't colonial silver, just an 1853 half dime. Still silver, though, so I'll take it.

Re: Saturday's colonial pit dig

Looks like a fun day Bill. I like some of those hand forged iron spikes. They look to be in pretty good shape and should clean up nice.
