Todd Hiltz & myself got out to a couple Cellar holes today.1st site coughed up some buttons and fizzled out.We then moved onto next site.It was real quiet there.on the backside of the cellar I got one button and turns out to be a Admiral Vernon Button...circa 1739-1750.unfortunately it looked better dirty as the dirt filled in the pits. Also from the same site was this 1600's laten spoon bowl. Thanks to the guys on American military button page for all the input and IDing it for me.last site coughed up some designed dandy buttons and the tiniest axe head I ever seen.also dug a WWII Naval honorable discharge stud at a newer cellar. Was a great day to be out.

Like I said Dave sometimes I wish I hadn't cleaned them at all but wanted to find the touch mark. I hope these examples will help you decide how you want to proceed. That button is just incredible man!!!!
I think I will just leave it alone.I don't think there is any silver wash under the patina.

Thanks man! Washington's brother served under Admiral Vernon and Mount Vernon was named after this gentleman. Interesting facts.
Very interesting facts and finds from this hunt! - Plus I learned about laten spoons and touch marks today. Someday you should open your own museum with all that you have found over the years, Dave. I'd pay admission to see all of your finds in one place. :notworthy:

Exceptional button Dave! Is that an iron or brass shank? If iron, I'm amazed that the pewter and iron didn't react during the 250 or so years it was in the ground.

Funny enough I have a site with a cluster of nests identical to those right by some water too. However I'm in NJ. I'm curious as well to what they are.

Great button again Dave. That button would make my year.

A killer button, and other great finds. Like you, I've never seen an axe head that small. My wife collects vintage cast iron and has multiple miniature cast iron items that were made to be manufacturer trinkets and toys to be given away to customers, so this may fit that category. Congrats!
