This one has just hit this past week. It is scheduled for a committee hearing on 2 Feb at 1:30 pm.

There is a bill in the senate and one in the house. They are identical. Numbers are SB6743 and HB3096.

The bill is below. It is another attempt to control private property. Get the word out to oppose this ASAP. Don't let them get a foot in the door.

The sponsors of the House bill are listed below. The senate sponsors are McDermott and Kauffman. The sponsors need to be flooded with contacts.

1 AN ACT Relating to archaeological investigations on private land;
2 and reenacting and amending RCW 27.53.070.
3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:
4 Sec. 1. RCW 27.53.070 and 2005 c 333 s 21 and 2005 c 274 s 243 are
5 each reenacted and amended to read as follows:
6 It is the declared intention of the legislature that field
7 investigations on privately owned lands should be ((discouraged
8 except)) conducted by professional archaeologists in accordance with
9 both the provisions and spirit of this chapter ((and)). Persons having
10 knowledge of the location of archaeological sites or resources are
11 encouraged to communicate such information to the department. Such
12 information shall not constitute a public record which requires
13 disclosure pursuant to the exception authorized in chapter 42.56 RCW to
14 avoid site depredation.

Where do they get this crap. I for one am about sick & tired of the archaeologist thinking that everything that was ever lost or thrown away is of archaeological value right up to & including that old rusty beer can. Of what value is that? I do believe that ancient sites like burial grounds and such should be protected but the items that have been lost or thrown away by others should be up for grabs for those willing to put in the time to find it.

What is the status with this bill? Did it pass/fail? Anyone from WA know the answers?
