The earliest documented use of the term “sea lion” is from 1601 by the English scholar Philemon Holland. It’s thought to derive from the shaggy ‘mane’ on adult males having a resemblance to a lion’s mane, perhaps reinforced by their lion-roar-like bellowing.

The name only properly refers to eared seals, with earless seals just being known as “seals”. Oregon is home to three sea lion species and two seal species. That looks to be the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus).
