I found an old button it has (US) on the face. I found it while detecting an old school, being turned into some sort of business.
I would like to present the owner of the building with a display of the more interesting items I find on the property for giving me permission to detect it. So far the button is the most interesting find. but it looks kind of dirty. Should I clean it and how should I clean it?

Howyadoin willey,

Don'tcha think this would be a good spot for photo illustrations?

One man's idea of "kind of dirty," is another's picture of proper patina.

What would the recipient prefer?

You've kicked the old and crusty vs. old & newly shiny can, I fear. 8-)

Nice patina... I'd leave it alone.

Don't touch it, it's great as it is. The most I would do is brush it with a soft toothbrush under some water, that's it.
