I use a shovel that I bought from a garden supply site years ago. It has a narrow planting blade with serrations on one side and a D handle. It is made of all steel. I coated it with thinned rubber dip . It has paid for itself many times over in cache recoveries. It was called the shark. Frank...

For the first 20 years i used Craftsman`s (Sears) short shovels 30" or so long... 1 every 10 years.. Good shovels.
In 1993 I started selling the Lesche brand of digging tools in my old shop, i have used the same T handle LS Land Shark 28"all this time...i think they call it the Ground Shark now ? anyways i got 20 years on it and i beat the heck out of it...and it`s a darn good weapon in the woods relic hunting. They cost a lot more now ...but what don`t.

I have the lesche sampson mini. Great shovel that digs a clean plug and is easy to dig down deep with. Fits in my belt pouch too.

I bought a cheap mini shovel from Harbor Freight. I've been abusing it in the woods for over a year and it's held up good. I forgot it one day and stopped at Wall-mart and bought another one. I hate the one from Wall-mart. It's falling apart after one time in the woods. :BangHead:
The one in the picture looks like it would chop through the roots. It all so looks heavy.

The Lesche brand is the ones I have been looking at. With all the different handles and spade heads, I didn' t know if were advantages over one style vs. another. thanks for the help so far.

I have the Lesche Raven shovel and love it. Lesche makes several models and come with a 5 year warranty. They are well built and worth every penny. Which ever model you go with you will love the Lesche.

You've received some good suggestion...

Thought I would show you a shovel I built over 20 years ago. The shovel was built to be light and strong and also be used as a walking stick when I rockhounded in the mountains. The head,or spade, is removable and a protective cap is screwed on the end when used as a walking stick. It also has a rake head that can replace the shovel head. You want find one like it in the stores, it wasn't cheap to make... it's all titanium.

There're more types of shovel than I was expecting. Would someone please point me in the right direction.

Lesche 36" Ground Shark.
