Sign of alien life? Kepler telescope spots strange star | Fox News

By Michael Casey Published October 15, 2015 FoxNews.com

A distant star is getting a lot of attention from astronomers – possibly as a sign that alien life is out there.

The star KIC 8462852 was discovered through Planet Hunters, a citizen science program at Yale University. Taking data from the Kepler Space Telescope, volunteers go searching for signs of a drop in light due to orbiting exoplanets crossing in front of their parent stars.

KIC 8462852 is 1,481 light years away from Earth. A light year measures the astronomical distance that light travels in one year and is equivalent to 5.8 trillion miles.

Yale University astronomer Tabetha Boyajian, who wrote a paper on the star that appeared in the Monthly Notes of the Royals Astronomical Society, told the New Scientist that she was drawn to the star’s flickering behavior.

She then sent her data to Penn State University astronomer Jason Wright, who has done research on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

He was impressed.

“That was when I got interested in in it because the light curve is so bizarre,” Wright told FoxNews.com. “It gets dimmer for days at a time. We haven’t seen anything quite like this.”

Wright said such behavior has been seen in young stars. Such flickering in young stars, he said, could be from something landing on the star, a disc of material passing in front of it as well as something like the “recent discovery of a giant planet with enormous rings and it very slowly, over the course of a month or two, passed in front of its star and the star kept flickering, blinking out as the rings went by.”

But KIC 8462852 is not young.

“This seems to be old. It doesn’t show any signs of youth. It is nowhere near a place that stars form,” Wright said.

“It’s moving too quickly to be a young star. It doesn’t look young,” he said. “So, that gets rid of all the natural, obvious things. Then, you start reaching for contrived ways to do this to an old star.”

In her paper, Boyajian, according to the Atlantic, ruled out a number of scenarios for the odd flickering, including instrument malfunction. She came up with only one scenario that made sense – a sea of comets pulled inwards by another passing star.

Wright said this is a “nice but contrived explanation” – and something that would have been incredibly hard for planet hunters to have noticed.

“We just happened to be looking when a giant swarm of enormous comets is passing by,” he said. “Maybe. Something weird is going. This may be the best explanation I’ve heard so far.”

Another possibility is that the flickering is a sign of alien life, a swarm of megastructures built by space creatures passing in front of the star.

Such a scenario was first proposed in 2005 by astronomer Luke Arnold.

“If alien civilizations do build giant structures, planet-sized structures in space, sometimes they will pass in front of their star and it will look different from when a planet transits the star,” Wright told FoxNews.com. “If Kepler surveyed 100,000 stars and one of those is surrounded by alien megastructures, Kepler will notice them. They won’t look like a planet. They will look very different.”

Wright said it was “notable” that KIC 8462852 has these “very strange signatures that presumably are consistent with giant noncircular structures going in front of it.”

But Wright added that the the flickering of KIC 8462852 is “unlikely to be aliens.”

“But you have got to look,” he said. “It’s got us intrigued and it’s worth it for SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) to take a look because that is what SETI does. SETI is a moon shot, a long shot …You have to try and this is one of the best places to look.”

With a clear explanation elusive, Boyajian is now teaming up to write a proposal with Wright and Andrew Siemion, the Director of the SETI Research Center at the University of California Berkeley. They would like to direct a huge radio dish at the star to see if it emits radio waves of the “sort that could only be emitted by artificial technology.”

“If you see radio emissions of the sort that we’ll look for with this antennae coming from that star, then that is case closed,” Wright said, comparing such a discovery to something out of the movie “Contact”. “There is no natural way to generate those. That is why they do it. It’s a slam dunk case for alien intelligence.”

We spoke with some of the astronomers who discovered the 'alien' megastructure to find out if it's fact or fiction

The award for strangest star in the universe just went to KIC 8462852.

And while some are saying that this star could be harboring a giant structure built by an advanced alien civilization, the scientists behind the hype are saying otherwise.

Business Insider recently spoke with two of these astronomers to find out what's really going on and if this structure really is proof of alien intelligence or a complete hoax.

For some background: A postdoctoral graduate at Yale, Tabby Boyajian, and Penn State astronomer Jason Wright, recently discovered a bizarre and mysteriously giant structure orbiting the star that's unlike anything they've ever seen.

And now they're doing what scientists do best: weighing all of the possible explanations until more data comes in that can rule out the wrong reasons in favor of the right one.

Right now, there are many options on the table, including a giant swarm of comets, left-over chunks from a broken-up planet, and last but certainly not least an alien-built megastructure. But we won't know for sure until more data is collected.
Is it aliens?

As Penn State astronomer Kimberly Cartier told Business Insider about the coverage: "It's gotten a bit out of hand." What's more, she said that the probability of this exciting, yet wildly confusing, observation being aliens is "very low."

She also emphasized: "Just to clarify, neither [my colleague] Jason [Wright] or myself ... are advocating that it is an alien megastructure, but we also can't completely rule it out."

Cartier works with Wright who is spearheading the search for these megastructures as a way to enhance the SETI (search for extraterrestrial intelligence) project. The two collaborated on a scientific paper about how to go about finding these structures back in 2009.

Moreover, Wright recently blogged about his work with KIC 8462852.

His post does an excellent job of presenting the data in a straight-forward, non-hyped way. But as he recently told Atlantic reporter Ross Andersen, "Aliens should always be the very last hypothesis you consider, but this looked like something you would expect an alien civilization to build."

We asked Wright how he felt about the hype his quote has since spawned.

"I think the star is really inexplicable, but I would put the probability that [aliens] is what it is as very low."
What's really going on

Right now, the only scientific information astronomers have for star KIC 8462852 is its light curves, which is an estimate of how much light Earth receives from the star over a given period of time.

These light curves reveal that something giant, about half the width of the star, is blocking the light but in bizarre bursts that are anything but periodic. If the obstruction were a planet eclipsing the star, it would block the light with a predictable pattern as the planet orbited the star.

But "the eclipses have very strange shapes in the sense that whatever is blocking it is not a circular object," Wright told Business Insider. "And there's lots of them — lots of things blocking the star. When you put all that together, there's nothing like that [anywhere else] in the sky. It's unique and very very strange."

These light curves were first collected by a post doctoral fellow at Yale, Tabby Boyajian. After Boyajian presented them at Penn State, Wright took an immediate interest and soon after contacted Andrew Siemion, who works at the Berkeley SETI Research Center. The two submitted a telescope proposal to study the star in more detail that is still pending.

What wright would like to do next is take what are called spectra of the star. Spectra are a critical tool in astronomy that allows researchers to essentially take a chemical fingerprint of an object that tells them what it's made of.

"I want to see spectra when its dim and spectra when its bright and compare the two," Wright said. "And the difference should tell us what the light is passing through and tell us whatever is blocking it, what that's made of. That will be very diagnostic."
Is Earth doomed?

In the mean time, as we wait for Wright and Siemion to collect more information, it is worth addressing the possibility that if (and that's a very big if) this structure were made by an alien civilization, is Earth doomed?

To that, Cartier said absolutely not.

If the structure were artificial, it would be what Cartier and Wright describe as a Dyson sphere, which is a type of energy generating device and was first described by theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson in a 1960 paper in Science.

"The structure itself is not meant to support life, Cartier told Business Insider. "It's something called a Dyson sphere, which is essentially a large porous series of solar panels ... that's meant to capture some of the starlight and convert it into usable energy for a civilization that's orbiting farther out in a region that would be more habitable."

While constructing a Dyson sphere would require a tremendous amount of resources, it does not take technology that is vastly advanced to our own to build. That means, these potential alien beings have not likely invented warp drives to skip across the galaxy just yet.

"Certainly to build a structure that big requires a lot more resources and potentially more advanced technology than we currently have available to us," Cartier told Business Insider. "However that doesn't imply that they have the capabilities to travel all the way here to Earth."

Moreover, if this, in fact, were a Dyson sphere, it would be a work in progress because of its apparent shape, Cartier later told Business Insider in an email.

The star KIC 8462852 is over 1,400 light years from Earth. So, don't worry, the world won't be coming to an end due to an alien invasion any time soon.

ssp-tachyon-drives.jpg SSP-Book-Banner2-cropped.jpg

A fleet of spacecraft have been secretly constructed using tachyon drives that are capable of interstellar travel at superluminal speeds. This astounding conclusion emerges from the disclosures of a whistleblower claiming to have served for 20 years on several secret space programs. Corey Goode says he served for six years on a spacecraft capable of interstellar travel that was named after a famous German theoretical physicist, who first proposed the existence of superluminal particles later named tachyons.

In an April 4 email interview, Goode described how he was recruited to serve in a secret space program called Solar Warden. that was initially set up by the US Navy: “Solar Warden was indeed a heavily Navy program in the beginning with Air Force involvement later on.” He went on to describe Solar Warden as possessing both military and scientific research spacecraft, and says he served on one of the latter:

I was only assigned to the research vessel [ASSR “ISRV”– (Auxiliary Specialized Space Research) Interstellar-Class Vessel, Arnold Sommerfeld] for a little over 6 years.

It appears odd that Goode served on a spacecraft belonging to an alleged Solar Warden program named after Arnold Sommerfeld, a German theoretical physicist who lived from 1868 to 1951. Clearly Sommerfeld would have had to achieve something quite remarkable to have a ship posthumously named after him in a secret U.S. Navy created space program.

Arnold Sommerfeld is known for having supervised more Noble prize winners in physics than any other person in history. Quite a remarkable achievement but certainly not enough to have an interstellar class spacecraft belonging to another nation named after you. Sommerfeld is also known as the first person to propose the existence of superluminal particles that were later named “tachyons”. Here is a summary of the development of tachyon particles in theoretical physics:

Tachyons are a putative class of particles which [are]able to travel faster than the speed of light. Tachyons were first proposed by physicist Arnold Sommerfeld, and named by Gerald Feinberg. The word tachyon derives from the Greek tachus, meaning “speedy.” Tachyons have the strange properties that, when they lose energy, they gain speed. Consequently, when tachyons gain energy, they slow down. The slowest speed possible for tachyons is the speed of light.

Did ya all ever wonder this ? Just what if those other advanced life forms aren't all thatnice?
Here we are sending out all this stuff into space, and some of it actually tells where we can be found, what we look like, what we sound like and an invitation to "stop by" for lunch too probably.
Just what if,,,,we could possibly be "on the menu" ?
I se this whole "alien" thing like this.
IF there are superior intelligences out there, I fully see the inevitable "converting" , killing and attempted assimilation into their "society".
EXACTLY as the indigenous native American populations were treated by the "civilized" settlers that basically took from the indigenous peoples.
BUT
On the other hand the Sumerian tablets tell of those who came to Earth did teach the semi civilized societies of the finer points of running a society.
I want to believe,, but I am very wary if contact is made. (think the series "V".)

Hey, Guys...... People are wrong that all ET Beings are violent and/or demonic fallen angels...... we will not be invaded by aliens, but if we are, it will be a false flag event, orchestrated by the Cabal/controlling elite and/or Demons/fallen angels as a ruse as mentioned in scripture....I guess you & I will not be fooled......but many will......Here is why it will not be aliens......Actually the majority of all ET & ED Beings are friendly & benevolent, but yes there are a very few who are not,..... but only a higher Benevolent Spiritual Being, who happens to be currently in our Galaxy will bring us together, without physical involvement or direct confrontation, but with unlimited defense ability to prevent large scale battles or attacks on this Earth, so there will not be a WW3.

However, there are 3rd, 4th & 5th dimension physical ET beings, who are like us 3rd dimension humans of free will that can be violent, and seek or want domination, but will fail, and are small numbers. The 6th thru 9th density beings, are 100% Benevolent & Spiritual Beings and are here right now in our Galaxy to help us to increase our spiritual consciousness for our ascension to the 4th/5th Dimension/Density, that we are in the final stages of.......I can tell you more about this in a follow-up post.

So, how can we help ourselves to speed up this Spiritual Ascension? This is the way.

WHAT’S THE HIGHEST PRIORITY ACTION ITEM FOR HUMANITY TO DO RIGHT NOW IN RESPONSE TO THE REPORTS WE HAVE BEEN RECEIVING FROM THE BENEVOLENT & SPIRITUAL BEINGS?

The highest priority is to look closely at their message. The message is nothing revolutionary or new. It is the basic tenants of every religion and positive belief system.
First, we need to unplug ourselves from the mainstream media machine and stop looking at the differences that the “Elite” have used to keep us at odds with each other.
Keeping us divided and at each other’s throats over things like religion, politics, and the color of our skin is ridiculous.

The message clearly states that we should focus on becoming more loving, forgiving (of ourselves and others, thus braking the wheel of karma). We should focus on becoming more in service to others on a daily basis, without becoming door mats to negative-oriented people. We must focus on raising our consciousness and vibrations through prayer, meditation, Tai Chi, yoga or any number of other ways. There is no need to change our belief systems or adopt a new religion.

We should treat our bodies as temples and adopt high vibrational diets to aid us in raising our consciousness and vibratory states. In doing this, we will change the world one person at a time, even if that one person is ourselves.

search the internet on this subject for more information, or give me a shout back and I will send you some recent information and updates on this.

.....Thanks.

Those are two conflicting pieces of advice. Don't you think that the internet is the ultimate mainstream media machine?

Hey, Rebel-KGC & sdcfia......I have posted more on the new breakaway Secret Space Program, with many, many more personnel coming forward, and we are learning the truth about the overt & covert cover-ups by ALL of the worlds governments....although much more truth is now coming out after over 60-70 years of secrecy.

As far as our mass news media (MNM) versus the internet, there is really a big difference.......the MNM is totally controlled, except some radio stations, and "they" are working hard against them.....but NO, the WWW world wide web is not controlled by any one government or group......although again "they" are trying to under a one NWO (New World Order) that has been in process for a long time.

Who owns the Internet?
No one owns the Internet, and no one organization controls the Internet in its entirety. More of a concept than an actual tangible entity, the Internet relies on a physical infrastructure that connects networks to other networks. There are many organizations, corporations, governments, schools, private citizens and service providers that all own pieces of the infrastructure, but there is no one body that owns it all. There are, however, organizations that oversee and standardize what happens on the Internet and assign IP addresses and domain names, such as the National Science Foundation, the Internet Engineering Task Force, ICANN, InterNIC and the Internet Architecture Board. like was said no one owns the internet, and that a group of experts developed the internet.

The Internet is comprised of many independent networks. As such, it does not have a single owner, instead many people and companies own small pieces of it.

Plus I believe that there is almost like a higher unknown control, that allows the internet to remain FREE of total control, and in the hands of the people, vs the MSM by controlled governments......and/or even highly advanced Benevolent Spiritual Beings, that have the capability to make it and keep it as a open forum for the people by design.......I know a group of experts first developed the internet, but was it with the help of unknown technological advanced Spiritual Beings or Divine help, who is to say, we may be surpised at the answer. Thanks for looking.

wlb42, it's true that the internet offers many more "information sources" than traditional media provides, but that merely fragments the world into a myriad of thought groups at odds with not only the traditional mind-controllers (church, government, corporations, "the man", etc), but with each other too. Unfortunately, none of the thought groups have demonstrated any sort of self-evident "truth". I'm not saying that this is a bad thing for individuals - each of whom can now gravitate to ideas that they resonate with and allow them their own brand of "truth" to embrace - but it doesn't seem to provide a comfortable path for those of us curious about the "real truth" that is self-evident, and more likely to be valid. Lots of kooks out there - who among them aren't kooks?

For example, your Corey Goode material, the Secret Space Program. Like any number of effective science fiction books, internet websites, conspiracy theorists and traditional religions, governments and cults, the ideas are interesting and theoretically feasible, I guess, but the Goode allegations need to be accepted on faith alone - just like the hundreds of other thought models demand. After all, these are just ideas, not facts. If we've been on Mars for a recent couple of generations, why don't we know about it? Why is it a secret? Why has an elite group abandoned the people and problems on earth in order to colonize another planet? If the elite of the world have the capabilities to manage such a feat, why aren't they putting their brain power to work here on terra firma instead? Why should we embrace their efforts if they're keeping us in the dark? By implication, these are not man's friends, leaders or benefactors - they sound like a crew abandoning a sinking ship in the middle of the night. The whole idea makes me feel like a turkey on Thanksgiving Day. Timely analogy, huh? Ha ha.

Hey, sdcfia.....Happy Thanksgiving, my friend......but I am 73 and have been through ALL the points you just wrote off as untrue, science fiction, conspiracy theorists, etc.......but be honest, you have not researched it, to any depth, except to say they are theoretically feasible......

1st....the book is NOT fiction, science fiction or anything of the sort, where did you get that impression? It is a factual book, non-fiction written by Dr. Sala, who up front, had him heavily vetted by several highly skilled professionals and using his own discernment, that Mr. Corey Goode is in fact telling the truth.....and if you had done ANY research you would find Mr. Goode has a way above average dossier, background & work history and there has been an extreme effort to de-bunk his first-hand in person reports & interviews, UNSUCCESSFULLY..... for example check his LinkedIn professional review, as a starter.

2nd.... the other reason, I know that most of the reasons for your questions you asked, has been you have not fully investaged these issues of your "why" questions, because if you had, there are many answers of truth uncovering secret agendas, by almost every large organization of any kind, including: Corporations, governments, religions, Mass Media, etc......it is only human nature of power and "love of money" to control someone or something within their paradigm.

3rd.... and it is important to be an open-minded sceptic of anything you read, hear & see......but most important is to use your own discernment after a full investigation of any topic (as I have over hundreds of hours and many days/months doing on Mr. Corey Goode).......I hope you & your Family, Have a Great Thanksgiving.

Thanks for the good wishes, wlb - back at you.

"A wise man proportions his belief to the evidence." The burden of proof for the Goode material is on him, not me. I've read enough to see that his allegations are not in any way verifiable or more convincing than dozens of other internet-based conspiracy theories. I've heard, first hand (their lips to my ears), a number of pitches (some of them truly outstanding performances) from cult recruiters, religious proselytizers, political radicals, treasure pimps, UFO contactees, greenie activists, etc., all with a common flaw shared by Goode - a lack of supporting evidence that would warrant a commitment from me. So for me ... I'm out. I guess for you, it works. That's good for you. I hope you get what you're looking for.
