If it has a D mintmark, it cannot be silver. Sorry.
 

We were thinking it came straight from the mint though.
 

Like the others said, if it's P or D, then it can't be silver. Only San Francisco mints silver.

It could be:
1) Plated (most likely)
2) Clad layer not showing (it happens)
3) Foreign planchet (rare, but possible! Weight it)

I've collected about a dozen of them from vending machines on my job. If it's really shiny, it's plated by a company that sells them in sets for novice collectors.
 

Check it with a magnet. If it sticks, its clad. If it doesn't, ya just got luck.

I have found a handful of these quarters as well... real shiny silver rim, too good looking to be true... yeah it is lol
