Hunting in a nail bed near a historic mining town that had an early US military presence at one time, found a 1854 P dime with my CTX3030 with an 11" coil. I had a very limited amount of time to hunt the site. Would have used my 6" coil if I had more time. It goes to show that an 11" will work in heavy ferrous if swing speed is slow enough and paying close attention to the audio. This is my third seated dime...I'm pretty pleased. Way to work it! Thanks for sharing and may the smaller coil bring more.

Oh man that is beautiful. I've been hunting in the East Coast which should be seated paradise and have not found a single seated after digging over 350 silver coins in 3 1/2 years. So yes I'm jealous lol. Congratulations on a beauty!

Nice find!
Here is a 1853 map of that area.

If I'm right about the area your talking about....
The town isn't really shown on this map or any other map until at least 1860.
You have to kind of think about it a little.

There is an early military expedition camp site that I'd like to look for near there.

very nice find!

Two questions:
1. Whats a good source for maps like the above?
2. Can I come hunt with you?

:)

Thanks all for the replies. The fact is I hunt hard, sometimes for 6 to 8 hrs a day for several days in a row till my arm is about fall off. Many times I find very little. For those that think the CTX 3030 is heavy try gold prospecting with a GP3500 Minelab and swinging a Apex brand pick for a day.
I'm a merchant mariner so I have about 45 days off at a time, giving me much opportunity. Many sites I go to are remote and require a four wheel drive vehicle. Once again thanks all⛏[emoji631]⛏

Congrats. I hunt around that area quite a bit. I have found some good early relics and coins. If you ever want to meet up for a hunt, we may be able to share sites

Very nice looking seated dime. The CTX will find non-ferrous targets in heavy iron. Once I found a shoe buckle a foot down and under a ton of iron. Great machine.

I also happen to be in the merchant Marine. I work as a C/M and Relief Capt aboard oil tankers. Cheers
