Probably the remains of a 55 gallon drum as well as a rusted out old abandoned car. Gave up digging on it when I realized what it was.
Would have loved checking out the back seat for coins.
Well I found the 55 gallon lid to "Against the Wind"s 55 gallon drum above. Somebody used it to cover an old coal opening to a basement. When I pulled it up there was still a metal shoot heading to the basement. At the time I thought I was really onto something. It took 2x's the amount of dirt to refill the hole!
I was metal detecting in a preserve around here, and I was having a huge signal. I dug about one inch before I hit the roof of a car. Decided not to dig it because there were a lot of other rusty car frames just lying all over the place.
yesterday i was digging a pretty good signal when clunk in a area of the hole the thick metal sheet was 2 feet down the hole was 3 feet wide on all sides and there was old cans on the top it no idea what it is maybe a cover for a cellar or a well
on land - think biggest I actually dug was a large plow blade
in water - huge copper sign - still out there - like 4 by 7
and huge cog/gear for an old canal door - they replaced the canal lock and used this gear for a weight to tie down floating
platform off old beach - lots of old gold and silver found around it
It's crazy what you guys have found. A few days ago I was detecting in my front yard and got a big signal, I dug down about a foot and found a big chunk of iron, I dug about 2 feet of it and couldn't budge it. I could tell that it was a piece of railroad rail. I hooked on to it with the tractor and pulled out a 10 foot long piece.
The Biggest was WWII D4 bulldozer buried on the Aleutian chain, All items put into the permafrost as our military was leaving, We started the Dozer and drove it onto the landing craft-90fter.the items were all covered in tarps that were still in good shape. Brought home a nice limit of geese that trip too, that was back in 1983.
