sleigh bell

hi all, i got out for only my second time this year. found 2 memorial cents a bunch of trash and a sleigh bell. this is not my first bell, but it's different, it's not brass colored. it was about 4 inches down, full of mud and the ball inside as well as its steel attachment pin are about rusted away. it has a silver color and no markings at all. is it possible that its stainless steel? it hit with a super strong signal, hard to pinpoint. i wasnt aware that stainless was in common usage so long ago. any thoughts? im sure it is old. jim

thanks for the info, i didnt know stainless was so old. you're thinking stainless plated brass then?
