Best known as a maker of U.S. military equipment and uniforms, and fraternal order regalia, the Ames Sword Co. of Chicopee, Massachusetts also produced assorted hardware and machinery. In addition, it succeeded the Gaylord Mfg. Co., located in the same city. Gaylord had manufactured many of the same types of items, and even though its lock-making operations were bought out by the Eagle Lock Co., the changeover no doubt encouraged Ames' efforts along the same lines.
