Wow, that is a strange one. :icon_scratch: It almost looks like slate in the pic. Definitely metal though? Interesting find! :icon_thumleft:

Slate, that is what I was thinking, but that would not register with MD. Maybe it was forged by someone who didn't quite know the blacksmith trade very well. Neat find.

I like the slate idea, at first I thought that this axe had been used to mix cement or something long ago but cement doesn't stick to a magnet.

That is unusual. I'd like to see some other angle pics of it. Maybe post it on the "What Is It?" forum and see if anyone has seen one like it before. :dontknow: Could it be a Native American artifact?

Neat find. :icon_thumright:

Thanks for adding some pics, RA. :icon_thumright: Without seeing it in person, I still think the top two pics look like natural stone. But I'm no blacksmith. :icon_scratch:

Let me know, please, if you get a positive ID on it.

Looks exactly like poor quality steel that is delaminating. So I'm going to speculate that it was made with poor quality materials or workmanship by a blacksmith. It was either not heated hot enough or wasn't addequately hammered to mix the original layers of steel. The heating and pounding were also instrumental in tempering the steel.
Just an educated guess!
Steve :-)
