Smelly Sluice??

Ok, Ok, I'm sure I sound nuts here... but has anyone else had a problem with a sluice starting to smell funky? I've got the carpet in mine, and I have been starting to notice that every time I use my sluice, that car smells funky for a week or so. I've never had a problem before, and had always assumed that between living in dry Colorado, the car getting sunbaked and warm, and then running the air conditioning, it would dry out well enough bacteria or what ever wouldn't have much chance to grow.

Any thoughts

sounds a little fishy to me
I tend to change out my carpet a couple of times in the summer, let it dry completely beat the snot out of it, inside a bucket. can't recall ever having a smell to it, light hand wash, hang dry should work

All I can tell ya is my boots smell funky too, but the funk is different. I just know that the smell only comes back when I go prospecting, and the only things that end up in the cab are my boots and my sluice. I've only got the one carpet, but I regularly take it out and beat all the fine stuff out.

My only other thought is all of my previous sluicing has been in pretty clean mountain streams... Lately I have been hitting spots in Denver, so maybe I am just picking up some of the city filth...

Anything that gets wet frequently can stink if not dried fully.
Mildew/mold etc grows and once it starts to smell you'll never get rid of it.
Although miners moss technically lasts forever could be changed every few years, I'd burn it to recover any trapped gold
If your using carpet you may have to change it more frequently or buy a roof rack for the car and forget about it.

Also, there was moss, leaches, flatworms, and a lot of tiny critters where we were yesterday. There could be any of those stuck in the miners moss dead and rotting. Just an idea.

no, no,no, burning miners moss, big mess pvc vinyl toxins, but what do i know, it will shrink over time,
loose loops no need to burn shake rattle and roll in a bucket all done

When I'm not going to be going the next day I'll hang the carpet to dry completely along with the rest of the sluice before putting it away, if you don't take it out of the sluice it may feel dry but the bottom that's next to the sluice will still have moisture.

I'd like to say that prospectors should always wash and dry their gear COMPLETELY between rivers, which will help stop the spread of Didymo. It’s a microscopic alga known as a diatom that’s invading our rivers and streams. Some people call it rock snot. Its pretty gross, and slimy and invades and takes over the streams. Its one the main reasons that felt-bottomed boots are banned in most areas of the USA now. Wet stinky gear can hole algae spores only to be released in another, perhaps pristine, stream.

Yea, I've been taking the sluice and my wading boots and leaving them on the top of my car to sunback at work, and the problem has been solver. Danged dirty city water......

Seriously though, can you imagine packing one of those little backpack dredges into some high country a few miles, and sucking globs of crap like that through it? I'd be a-pukin' for sure.

By the way I read an article about this didymosphemus gemimata and scientists are now recanting the idea that it's transferred to waterways by animals and people but instead it's always been there but is now blooming and becoming a problem because of global warming. Supposedly they are finding fossilized rock snot in every country around the world except for Africa, Australia and Antarctica.
My opinion is that they have no idea what's causing it and they don't want you wearing felt boots because you look like a musketeer

First of all, I am happy to hear that you love you wife. Its takes a lot of love to tolerate gnocchi that looks like that. My brother and his wife stayed with us for a couple weeks during and after the ice storm of '08 crashed a tree through the roof of his house. Sis-in-law made gnocchi. She was so proud of it. It was utterly inedible, but being the gracious bro-in-law that I am, I devoured it with some stylish flair, claiming it was terrific. I hate myself for lying to her. You wife's gnocchi actually looks much better than hers, S4G, so I'll give you that much.

Now about the felt.

I'm glad you said that. I will research it because I am an avid flyfisherman, and felt boots are the only thing that actually works well for these old legs. I taught my son how to flyfish when he was a wee lad, and he's been my best fishing buddy ever since, but since I have gotten a little older, its harder for me to keep up. Perhaps a new set of felties will do the trick if the states ever get around to making them legal to wear in the streams again.

Yep I really liked my felt bottomed shoes for being in the streams esssssssssssssssssssspecilly when moss is involved! but it is what it is and they are gone now!
