After work yesterday I went out to the North Fork of The Stilliguamish river, north of Seattle by an hour or so. The river had been swollen a few days ago from a 3" mountain rainfall and at the same time the humpback salmon are running. It is amazing to see what the rise in the waters will bring, on of those things being I found a number of dead salmon as high as 3 feet up in riverside bushes! I did a little mossing while out and in an hour or so of looking around and a few pans, probably ended up with 70-80 tiny specs of flood gold. Nice afternoon, and as always, sure enjoyed being outdoors!.

What do others do while the rivers are full of spawning fish and you cant run your sluice?!

Fish love prospectors. So many interested little fellows out there. That's why I love getting out. Most times its me, the trout and some honker geese.

Jesse, those Pinks are up there spawning, so be real cautious around the
gravelly areas of creek bottom, as they'll likely contain redds (eggs) from
those fish. For those not familiar with spawning salmon, the eggs
will sit in that gravel till bout late Dec. into Feb., then they'll be
hatching out, and in a couple years those fish will return again.

Now might be a good time to hit a few smaller creeks that are not holding
salmon. I'm afraid if WDFW (or their minions) gets word there's
prospecting activity on top of redds, they'll get their knickers in a
twist over it. The wild steelhead run will be starting soon, as well,
and every one of those eggs is precious because there's damn few
truly natural, wild fish left.

Fortunately, the Pink (Humpy) run is about over here on the Skagit,
as there's got to be a few hundred of them lying dead on the beach
just below the house. The 'coons, possum, skunks and coyotes are
having an all-you-can-eat salmon banquet. Thank the Lord we've
had cold nights and cool days, otherwise those carcasses would be
stinking to high heaven..

Drop me a PM and maybe we can get together up here at one of
my spots, as I do work a few creeks where there's no spawning
fish.
