my friend told me about these pieces he has found over the last few weeks
he is interested in comments on the gray chert (TRSS) point which has tip damage
i am thinkng either oxbow or duncan-hanna
also note the flat bone fish hook blank which would have yielded two hooks when finished IMG_1711.jpg IMG_1713.jpg IMG_1714.jpg IMG_1716.jpg IMG_1717.jpg IMG_1718.jpg IMG_1719.jpg IMG_1722.jpg IMG_1724.jpg IMG_1723.jpg

Hello Steve; The broken tipped point looks like a possible McKean Lanceolate point. Beautiful material in the other High Plains points, and cool design in the pottery chards. Elk antler tip, any signs that it could have been used in pressure flaking? Super finds, Congratulations!

Nice group of artifacts. I like the large side notch.

Steve, could you post some pictures of the largest side notched points you or your friends have found, especially the ones you call "jaw notched" and/or "jaw notched billings"

Thanks

i will do it
we dont find any bigger but i will get some jaw notch points and post them
they are usually the finest examples of flaking we find
i would think it took a special talent to get the jaw notch just right
stay tuned i will post you some good examples my friend

the point in the first post is about the largest we have found
now here are images for your perusal
the first and second ones are jaw notched billings
the last one is a regular jaw notch arrow point
you can see why they are called jaw notched as the inside of the notch is larger than the outside edges IMG_0331.jpg IMG_0332.jpg IMG_1197.jpg IMG_1200.jpg IMG_1200.jpg IMG_1279.jpg IMG_1280.jpg

here is another one, as you can see, this is not the billings style with one longer leg

Those are amazing pieces Steve ...great material, thanks for posting them.

I have seen some quite large side notched knives in other Mandan/Arikara
collections and most always are well made from high-grade lithic sources.
