After 22 years I finally got permission to hunt this site again. It still needs rain but I was able to find a few nice pieces and lots of broken pieces. All of the Pottery in the last picture are Rim Shards. Those all came off the river bank.

Felt really good to walk this spot again. My dad and I used to hunt this a lot and found well over 100 perfect Triangles there once, along with Beads, Pendants, Scrapers, etc. One of our best hunts ever. Wish he could still walk it with but his knees are shot and at 84 he's not interested in replacing them.

You gonna get to look again?... And what kind of place you searching? Fields, woods, or just a river bank

Looks like there are still plenty of great artifacts to be found there, that is quite a haul. I bet your dad loves to see you back in there even if he cant go.

Did the Ft. Ancient culture exist at the same time as the Mississippians at Cahokia? Before? After? Gary

He was spreading fertilizer so he told me to wait at least a week before I came back. It is a very large field right on the river so I can hunt both.

This particulat site has been carbon dated at around 1400 to 1650 AD or so. Most FA sites in my area date from around 1000 to 1650 AD.

Not speaking for Grim, but the Ft. Ancient culture is much more similar to the Oneota Culture than to the Mississippian people at Cahokia. The sites, pottery, points, art, and even the possibility of finding historic items at some sites is all similar.

It's nice you're enjoying that site again. I feel for your father. I had a knee replacement last summer. I'm doing great now but at his age the physical therapy would be brutal. Keep showing us those finds &I wish your father the best.

That’s a great field hunt.
There is so much to learn about the different regions. From what I can piece together, the Fort Ancient Sites, fall within the late Woodland period. Is that correct?
One other thing (dare I). In the last picture. Top right, there seems to be a prominent profile (a face that is).

I was wondering when someone would see that. It is definitely a face profile but I am also 100% sure it's not made that way on purpose. Very cool though.

I call him Smilin' Bob.

I'm so glad you got back to it Steve! If i remember correctly you could only have access to a eroding hillside adjacent to it? or was that a different ft ancient site?
regardless, look forward to more awesome stuff. i hope you find the other half to the best/worst heart breaker from 22 years ago to do an epic put together.

This is is a different site. My hillside site is in Ohio and this one is in Greenup county Kentucky.

Not sure if you ever heard the story, but to keep it short, I got a trespassing ticket in 1997 after the owner died (had permission from him) and his wife took over the property. No warnings. Didn't go back until a guy I know bought the property and gave me permission again. I hunted the river bank a few times over the years but it's like a 2 mile walk through brush and bogs to get to it now so I didn't go a lot. Now I can drive right down and park right at the bank.

Here some one stuff I found years ago while hunting there and some I acquired recently.

Wow, those beads are mind blowing! Are those claws or teeth in the top photo? What kind of animal are they from??? Places with memories are some of the best places to hunt.
