The 1st picture is of a mostly submerged barge against the left descending channel span pier of the lower bridge at Vicksburg on the Lower Mississippi river. There have been a few collisions (bridges and other boats) and one allision (running aground) in the last few weeks with the extremely high water and what I think are relatively new pilots who are not used to the increased current and flow of this high water, and therefore don't compensate enough for those forces. There were 66 boats waiting to go through the bridge south bound when I went through. I don't know how many were waiting north bound.

2nd is the casino just above the Vicksburg bridge.

3rd is an Artco boat named Joyce Hale which was in the process of over taking us when I took this Picture.

4th is a ship that is offloading its cargo into barges with big cranes. This was at mile 175 on the LMR. (lower miss. river)

5th is a N/B (north bound) ship that was going up the LMR.

6th is from the back of my vessel looking forward. We are approaching the Sunshine bridge in Donaldsonville area. This bridge is really high compared to most of the ones across the LMR.

Hope you like them.

Great pics capt :icon_thumleft:, they really show the power in the water. I think the shot of the casino boat is my favourite . I look forward to seeing more of your pics ;D.

No it is not under normal conditions. Once in a great while it gets really, really low and then the tides from the Gulf of Mexico will affect the lower part of the river.

Killer pics. Good luck to whoever has to recover the submerged barge. Thanks for the view.

I believe they are talking about cutting it in half to get it off the bridge but with the swift currents in that area it is going to be dangerous work to say the least. Operation may start in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the comments guys!

I grew up visiting the Soo locks in Michigan. I can remember my uncle pointing at the Edmund Fitzgerald when I was a kid. He said that was the biggest freighter at that time. A short time later that year she sunk in Lake Superior.

That is a really cool story! I have always been haunted by that song.
