I just found a Spaulding #3 brass cap almost exactly like yours. Mine is still screwed to a piece of the wooden head, I tossed it in my can o' crap! LOL I think yours is a little older than mine. Confederate flag looks like it had enamel paint on it that came off. Nice finds.

I found the confederate flag in the ground near Experiment, Georgia.

I am reading, "The history of XXX County Georgia." Here is an excerpt:

"The following description of events behind the lines during the war between the states was written by the wife of a confederate veteran.......

Then the sad leave-taking. In lieu of button-hole bouqets hearts were too sad for flowers- the boys in gray had miniature flags presented by ye ladie fair, a kind of talisman. The train moved out with loud huzzas and banners gay."


Now in the text she doesn't say whether the small flag was metal or cloth, but she calls it a talisman. Do you think the little metal flag in my pic is one of those?
