Hi Guys: Here is what my Dad Done back in the 1970's,
Dad Contacted the Local Electric Companies about contracting for thier Old & Burnt/lightening struck Transformers, Those big round things on the Electric poles,, He made arrangments to buy all of thier Old Transformers, He would pick up 7 or 8 at a time, in his spare time,haul them to a rual area that we owned,take them apart, Barrel the Oil haul it to a Oil facility,,Sell the Copper,Brass Bolts & nuts, the casings sold for steel,Heck It all sells, the smallest one he bought,, had around 16 lbs of Copper,the average one had around 25 to 30 sometimes 40 lbs, with the largest one he ever cleaned was a ground unit weighing 2700 lbs with around 500 lbs of Copper inside.This adds up fast he was making thousands of dollars doing this in the 1970's with Copper at .80 a lb. One Drawback is that (you have to have a legal place to dump the transformer oil) EPA will get ya!! ,it is toxic/hyd oil of some type. Anyways someone found out what dad was doing & how,they Offered the Electric Co more money,,dad lost his contract to a man that Owned a salvage yard & quit doing the Scrap thing!! Yeah he was Kinda aggervated that someone took his Gravy money away!! Sometimes it pays to keep quiet about what you are doing!!
