On the east coast the sands on the beach slowly move south to north all season. Over the years a lot gets buried.
One north easterly storm will move the many years of accumulated sand away leaving whatever that was dropped behind. That's why you see the hype in storms.
You'll hit pay dirt with commitment. Hit the water at low tide that's where most is lost and not found by others that MD.

Things get correlated when sand moves........ and a good bit of it get pulled out and buried in low troughs. ANYTHING with surface like a coin is constantly moving out there. When you arent finding coins, .... its because they are buried, have been picked up, or you just havent found the right target line..... which sometimes is in deeper water.

what city are you in gear-jammer ? Yes there was erosion during January, and yes some beaches got good for a day here and a day there. But others were sadly lame. You just had to know where to go, and sample several beaches, to find the Goldilocks "just right" beaches :)
