Interesting button, and I'm sure someone with chime in with an ID. Can you show a pic of the back? Is it two-piece?

I hope you found that with early finds, and it's legit, because it's a great find! Rev War - MASS Grand Army of 1775! Can you post the back?

I'd say you have a winner! Do you have a Facebook account? You could post it to the Rev War group on there.

How do i know its a repro? Shank doesnt seem drilled, seems appropriate aging for the period, six inches down. For future reference whats the tell on whether its a reproduction or not?

Look & feel on the numbering/front. Crispness of the edging & moulding of the inner circle. It's, not about drilling but more about whether its real or not.

Wow; kinda fooled me initially also. Provenance is important.

It can be important but comes with a health warning. Re-enactors do battles on or near known sites.
Plus many real Military buttons are found outside of a 'normal' Historical context. So Provenance can help build a good story, but it can also give more questions than it answers.
To me, I don't care where it was found, as long as its real. But some of those that paid silly money for them would differ from that opinion. (They like the battle story, even better if tied down to an individual)
