strange material I.D. please

I'm in NC and never in all my hunting seen anything like this before.. I know some of you know your material very well and would appreciate the thoughts.. it seems to have a little flaking on one side but doubt its anything. Thanks for your time guys

what you have is a piece of carnelian which is a kind of chalcedony or in other words an agate. I find them by the pocketfuls on the coast in Washington state and have even found a number of projectile points made from this same stone. Sometimes I find this stone as a fossil marine creature, most usually a clam. Really it is just a form of silica, not unlike quartz, but not a crystal.

He is correct..and if that is what it is the process happens with..marine organisms. Wood..coral..its agatized. A micro christalene silica. Where silica replaces the host material. the same process happens in limestone and creates chert. I still think it's agatized wood.
