Returned on my own for just over 2.5 hours to the Wheat Stubble Field I nearly completed a couple of months ago. There is just a small area I want to finish off before its ploughed again. Windy but pleasant morning before the forecast rain.

1 Scrappy Roman Coin
1 poor 18th C pewter Military Button
1 Rose farthing (1620s)
Spectacle Buckle

Star find was a Celtic (Iron Age) Woad Grinder circa 50BC, anything from this period makes it a good short hunt. It my first Iron Age Artefact this year & we don't get many. Bent but complete :)

Really like the grinder, congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Me to, I have only 1 bottom section & 2 other tops. 1 of the tops & a non-matching bottom all came from this field, something interesting was happening to have 3 seperate pairs on the same land :icon_thumright:

Not bad for 2.5 hours work Cru! :o
If I could find even half that kind of quality stuff in a year of hunting,
I'd be over the moon! :laughing7:

I like these buttons the best! :icon_thumright:

Your woad grinder is a very nice find! Do You think there was some kind of production site for woad? Do You had other iron age finds on this field?

As you probably know, Iron Age stuff is hard to come by, but it has produced 1 Silver Unit & 1 Bronze Coin (no gold, although the first 1 this year was 2 fields away). Its very near a Neolithic Temple Site & I wonder if they were still practicing ritual activity nearby in the Iron Age, but probably my imagination, as I have very little data to know the difference between this and a homestead.

My guess is that the holy places from our ancestors were used for a long time. Iron age places turned into roman temples, were used to build christian churches on them, why can't that be the same with a neolithic temple. Random finds from coins and the grinders all in the same area? :icon_scratch: Could be...
The site we talked about is similar. In a circle of one mile i got neolithic artefacts, roman finds, iron age is known there, also a holy well and a very early christian church. The second church on this place is reported from 950. I wish You good luck in some more finds there!
