It has been a long time since I've posted here, but thought I'd share my summer finds that I posted on a different forum last week.

I recently returned to the west coast from the annual family vacation on the east coast. Eight weeks of fun and sun and lots of water detecting, both ocean and fresh water. I was able to get out detecting almost every morning of the trip. The summer started out pretty slow in terms of good finds, but by the end of the trip, I feel like I did pretty well.

So, without boring you further with words, following are the photos of my better finds.

First gold of the summer was this man's 10K band:

Next up, four rings, including two gold found during the same hunt - a narrow 10K band, and a nice two tone 14K band:

This next picture is from two different hunts. The top half is a gold earring, and a silver ring, and the bottom half is a 14k ring with an initial in the heart.

Next up - I was very surprised to find this standing liberty quarter up near the beach of a freshwater pond that has been hunted by many detectorists over many years. I can only assume that some new sand might have been brought in from elsewhere and this quarter was deposited with the new sand. The ring is silver, with an imitation diamond.

Next is a find that really made my day! I got a light "iffy" signal, but have learned to always dig these, especially when the beaches are sanded in. This was out about waist deep in the water. Woman's 14K white gold band with 20 diamonds.

Then one morning I hit a beach where the conditions were just perfect! I've been to this beach in years past where it was like this - many quarters and nickels start coming out of the wet sand along the low tide surf line, some of them silver. Here are the coins from that hunt:

And here are the rings from that hunt - an 11.1 gram man's 14K gold ring with a stone in it, and a Palladium wedding band:

Here are the silver coins and rings cleaned up:

A few days later, I hit the jackpot with this 15.4 gram platinum band:

As summer vacation came to a close, I picked these two gold rings up on one of my last hunts of the trip - both 14K, and one with 5 diamonds:

07B1BB13-040E-41E7-A85C-C7F035644401-1110-000001E171071D23.jpg

This old silver religious medal came from the same area as the two gold rings - the inscription inside reads May God Watch and Protect Me:

On the stranger side of things, this find from the summer was a first for me - an ear tunnel:

And just so you know that the gold and platinum does not come easy, I finally sorted through my pouch dumpings from the past three summers, and here are the sinkers, coins, keys, and trash that I've dug:

I hope you've enjoyed the pictures. I hope to add a few more gold for the year from California, but I am sure going to miss detecting the waters of the east coast beaches!

Happy Hunting,

Jim

My goal each summer is to try to cover the rental mini van cost for the 8 weeks we are there, which is around $3,000. Last summer I ended up with $2,250 scrap value, and this summer is around $1,750. Of course like my wife always says, you need to actually cash in the gold to realize the value. I've yet to cash in any of my finds.

Your post was very motivational! Did you hunt in the Keys or northern Florida?

I don't hunt in Florida - much further north than that along the Atlantic Coast.

I hear that from my wife all the time. I keep telling her it is money in the bank. Some people buy Gold bullion or gold mining stocks, I just save my gold treasure. I may cash it in one day if the price gets high enough....... our 8 weeks of hunting was fantastic. I live near the beach and don't seem to find that kind of time to hunt.. Good luck in California. By the way, do you ever detect in the gold fields out there. I hope to take a trip out west one day and figured I would try to shoot some nuggets, not that it will be easy, just fun. No, I haven't done any gold field detecting here. I've often thought it would be a fun adventure though!
