Impressive, the buffalo has always been my favorite coin. I was getting about 3 a box for weeks and the last 2 weeks I've only found a handful. Oh well, there's always next box.

You can identify dateless '21 (and '21-S) without vinegar. It's the only date with those three little groves coming out of the top of the band at the top of the braid. 1920 and 1924 have similar details you can identify. I'm sure you also know about type 1.

Hey, thanks for the die detail info, I really need to get a main guide to Buffalos.
That informations is really amazing, It really shows in my photo that I never noticed.

With alot of dateless coins, I do the vinegar trick and It's like back in the old days
of waiting for a package in the mail....lol

Great tip!!!! Many thanks!!

It's a great trick particularly for the '21-S which is a key date and nobody knows about these details (also there's no '21-D, so even a fragment of a mint-mark is enough to make a positive ID). You can go through a dealer's "junk box" and pick one out for a 15 cents or whatever they happen to charge for dateless buffaloes.

It also helps to look at a lot of partial dates because sometimes you can identify the date with just a tiny fragment of the date plus the position of the "F". Also, look at "LIBERTY" which is shallower relief before 1916 when there was some minor design changes (also the length of the Indian's nose changes, but it's almost impossible to see that).

I completed an entire set of Buffaloes for less than the cost of an album with a combination of roll hunting, acid-dating, cherry-picking and savvy trading. I have a journal about that on coincommunity.com.
