My suggestion was to have PCGS or NGC do the conservation as their methods are acceptable in the Coin Collecting World. However, electrolysis may work if done correctly and very carefully. Personally, for such a coin, I think I was choose to try and Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner with just Distilled Water or a mixture of Distilled Water and freshly squeezed Lemon Juice. I can take an uncirculated Silver Coin with bad toning or a Silver Proof Coin with hazing and make them look like they just came from the Mint with no loss of Mint Luster, if I am careful but removing a crust from a Silver Coin that has been in the ground for decades, is another animal.

I hear you, and I've seen some nice work done cleaning old dug silver. On common dates, I totally don't mind experimenting a bit, I've done some electrolysis before with usually less then impressive results, but I've never tried to use it for just a quick 30 second jolt, which seems like it's such a short time it should've cause any visible damage.

This one is different, sans the CC issues, it's the key date seated quarter of the set...so I'm hesitant to try anything unproven on it. Tom has had his silver coins from this site in an ezest bath for days (since Monday?), and if I recall correctly his coins came out in worse condition then this one (perhaps not the barber, but keep in mind it's 50 years newer, so less effects of ground kiss I'd imagine). It's a real conundrum. I wouldn't mind if PCGS or NGC did the conservation, I'm sure they have proven methods.

Mintage: 56,000

Like the 1859-S Quarter Dollar, the 1860-S is a rare date that is virtually impossible to find.

As such, it is one of the most important condition-rarities in this series, on par with some of the 1870-1873 Carson City issues and the 1859-S.
