To end the year I took the kids to a local river to hunt river glass near home. While they were looking for glass and bottles I decided to try something different and dig through the dirt and gravel spots collected on the rocks under a walking bridge with just a pin pointer. I found the typical broken glass and a hardware store full of nails, but was surprisingly rewarded for my persistence. The first pit rewarded me with an amusement token and part of a button. The second pit I dug surprised me with what I thought was a modern dime and something else that looked like a coin. After a slight cleaning the dime ended up being a mercury dime (194?) and the other coin has the size and weight of a nickel, but it is pretty much toast. Not a bad way to end the year.

Nice Mercury Dime even without the full date...
Maybe the other toasted coin really is a nickel?
