Thanks Guys and I wish that was the case but unfortunately it is not. That patricular button is only significant because of the context of the find. (with GW buttons) The site also says... "David F. Johnson and a Col. Campbell declared they were the first Continental Navy buttons found to date." But that is incorrect, these are British Royal Navy buttons. I still like it but no GW connection on mine, just an early Navy.

If you look at the hammer price listed (which I haven't for a while) I don't believe that button got much more than maybe $400. That right there tells the story because that's about the range of what my button would probably bring if non dug. Obviously the serious guys at auction had very little interest in it.

PS... Did you know at that sale it was coin collectors who smoked the button guys for the high bids and bought all the best stuff.

I am a looooooong time coin collector that since finding a few buttons of my own has become more and more interested in them.
Maybe we just like small round shiny objects

When I started detecting it for just for coins, ones only 100 years old, all I thought that was possible. Not too long after getting going I found some good buttons and I'll admit at first the $$$ value is what made me like em, but now so many years later I like early military and coins the same. If I had to make a choice to only keep my relics or coins I would be very torn on what to do.

For me, relics win--hands down. They blow the $$$ value of the coins away. Coins are nice--but value-wise, it pays to know what relics you're digging.

This is my first and only button. I am new to the game and to TNet. My friend was more excited than I was when I found it. I didn't really understand what I had at the time, but it seems that I got pretty lucky.

Here's a few I've dug over the years, A rare MVC officer's button, a Georgia Military Institute staff cuff, less than a dozen or so known, a couple pics of SC's. and a group that came from a camp in Stafford VA, 3 eagle C's, Wisconsin. New Hampshire & New Yorks cuffs At the bottom is a gold locket with gold cloth inside dug in the same camp.

I found these in August 2008 at Ft Custer, Michigan. The left is a US Army Cuff and the right is a WW2 Wehrmacht Officer's coat button. Ft Custer housed German POWs during WW2
