When U.S. President James Garfield was shot in 1881, physicians were unable to determine if the bullet had entered a vital organ. This knowledge was needed quickly to decide the medical treatment required to save Garfield’s life. Alexander Graham Bell believed that he could use his recent invention, the telephone, with another relatively new development, the induction balance, to detect the location of the bullet. The test failed but led to mine detection and then to the bobby we now know as metal detecting.
