A friend took me to some out of the way sites yesterday. Below is the result.

My first large cent, 1854. A knife handle with a pewter cap. A partial flintlock rifle lock, from it's size it may be a pistol lock. A flower or leaf design decoration and a couple of nondescript pieces of interesting metal.

I have a 12V transformer sitting ready and am going to make a small electrolysis set up today and see what happens to the lock plate.

Can't wait to see that iron cleaned up.

Had a little hitch in my giddy-up. I went off to the grocery store and when I got back the transformer was dead-dead. I guess one of it's coils burned up or something.

Anyone ever try a 12V car battery charger on something like this. I don't want to burn it up also but a car battery charger is just a big transformer, AC to DC.

best thing to use for that is a cell phone charger with alligator clips, it'll take longer but the low voltage and amperage will
do a better job

Great Finds George, I use lower amp wall trasformers on stuff may take longer but have a better chance of not fring it.I would think 12v would need checking often.Just my thought I only use it time to time on real rusty things and a buckle now and then.Good Finds! :headbang: :hello2: :hello:

I use a 12V charger for my iron. On bigger iron, things get a little hot, but just don't leave it unattended. Works great for me. I use baking soda in distilled water as my electrolyte. Clean the de-rusted object with distilled water, treatments with 20% tannin solution, air drying, followed by drying out in oven at 200 F, followed by treatment with microcrystalline wax. Beautiful.
