What an absolutely perfect way for me to end the season...unless I bring along a pick axe...or sledgehammer. ;D
Seriously...this time was it....the ground is pretty much frozen now. ::)

The first hour at this beat up park was slooooowww...but picked a bunch after that.

My first dig of the day came about 1 1/2 hours into the hunt...and it was a 1907 Barber dime from about 8" down. I wanted to end the year with a silver on my last hunt...and that pressure was now gone. :icon_sunny:

I wandered around for another hour or so and finally got a decent, deep injun' hit. I popped out a nasty...and I repeat nasty injun from about 9". It was so nasty...that I didn't even know for sure it was an injun until I soaked it in oil for a couple of hours. :tongue3: It looks like it mutated in with some cement...and only about 1/4 of it is even visible. :tard:

Right about the 3 hour mark of the hunt...I got another nice but iffy silver hit. The cursor never settled anywhere...but did it's dance from top right corner...to top center....then fluttered around somewhere inbetween. The depth meter showed only the tiniest of black...and the sound was a nice higher warble which was faint even with my gain on 10....YIPPEE!
About 5 minutes later and from 9" down...out popped a second Barber dime...1905. :blob6: Okay...it's time to leave now......ummm....NO. ;D

Another hour or so went by before I got another signal...and I mean ANY signal. ??? It was a freakin' nickle hit...but I was bored so I decided to give it a shot. 8) I dug the plug out and started to clear the hole a little with my Lesche...when I struck greenish glass. ??? I didn't want to cut my hand...so I started to dig around the glass to get it out of the way...but it seemed to be a BIG piece. I kept on digging it out and carefully prying at it until it started to take the shape of a bottle. 8) I then noticed it had embossed writing on it...and I could make out Coca Cola. :o From that point on...I was very careful...but I thought there would be NO way the bottle would be intact. ...especially since I had "stabbed" at it a few times investigating the size before I realized what it was ;D

When it was all uncoverd and I plucked it out from over 7" down...I was amazed to see it was in absolutely PERFECT condition. :icon_sunny: I then ran the probe in the hole to see where the nickel hit came from...and out popped a buffalo nickle. So by absolutely nothing but coincidence and luck...I popped out a beautiful greenish embossed coke bottle...just because it was resting in perfect condition..right above a buffalo nickle....and which those lower sounding hits... I NEVER dig. The odds of me finding that coke bottle were probably 10,000,000,000 to ONE. The odds of it being undamaged were even greater than that. :D Somehow it must have gotten run over or something while being nestled in very soft mud...and then was safe from that point on to just slowly sink to the depth I found it at.

At this point there was still about an hour of daylight...so I thought...why quit now? I kept plodding along with a tight grip on the SE. I really had no choice about it...because my hand was frozen in that position. ;D

After 30 minutes or so I got a nice high warble hit that was almost too good to be true. :o It was one of the rare ones that repeated as I circled the hole. :o At the parks I hunt...those clear hits disappeared 10 years ago...unless you can get just a little deeper. I dug down 8" and then ran the probe...and like I knew it would this time...it sang silver. :headbang:
I carefully dug around the pinpointed area and popped out a 3" clod. Peeking out of the clod was a sweet little silver rim. :sunny: This usually doesn't happen...and I usually just pinch the clod...then the coin comes out. This time however...I could clearly see the sweet silver rim sticking out. I decided to leave it just like that until I got home to take a picture of it.
The thrill of not knowing exactly what it was kept me buzzing all the way home. :angel12:

I set it on the scanner for the pic...then it was time to pop it open to see what it was. Because of the nice clear lines around the rim...I was expecting a merc...but as you can see...I was pleasantly surprised with a second 1907 Barber dime. The cool thing is... that you can clearly see a perfect mirror image of the barber in the mud clod ...from where it was lodged for over 100 years. :clock: Pretty cool way to end my hunting season....with the thrill of popping open a clod with a silver rim peeking out. :angel8:

My take for the day...1 sweet old coke bottle by pure chance...1 nasty injun'...1 1920 Buffalo Nickle...3 Barber dimes...1905...and 2 (1907's)..and as ALWAYS...some peace and solace. :angel7:

The ground is now pretty much frozen here...so this was officially my last hunt of the year. ??? I hope you all have a nice holiday season...and that "cabin fever" doesn't get the best of us all. :tard: :tongue3: Thanks to all of you for viewing my posts..and for helping me enjoy this wonderful hobby. Take care...and have a Merry Christmas. :icon_santa:

My attention span is too short to stay with most of the longer posts, but this one kept me on the edge of my seat! ;D Great finds there! Two questions: do you ever wonder about those "signals I never dig?" I think the same thing myself, and wonder how many gold coins I've left in the ground because I didn't like the signal. The other question, could you post a picture of the Coke bottle's bottom? I always find it interesting to see where a Coke bottle was first used. Some bottles are worth more than others simply for the city on the bottom.

Man oh man Bryce you are smokin dude. What a way to round out the year. You say you never dig the nickle readings. You might want to reconsider. I used to never dig them either. This one hunt when I wasn't after colonial stuff exclusively I was swinging along and getting very few higher readings so I thought what the hell i'll dig a few nickle readings, well it's a good thing because instantly i dug my first shield nickle. About a half hour later another one, I thought man it's a good thing I decided to dig the lower readings. It wasn't an hour later BAM nice nickle reading. I couldn't believe what my eyes were seeing glittering in the hole. I saw the main stone and a couple of side diamonds and a good chunk of the gold sticking out of the dirt. I thought this would turn out to be a sixties cracker jack toy prize or something. Then I saw 14 kt and the brand of Keepsake and I about fell over. 23 diamonds on a 14 kt Keepsake diamond ring with a Marquise setting for the main stone. I had it appraised at around $1600 retail new. What a day that turned out to be and my wife is very happy to be decked out in a nice addition to her hoard of jewelry. To this day I learned a valuable lesson and dig at least a certain percentage of those nickle readings. Bryce my man you have a very merry xmas and also with the new year fastly approaching we will reset our totals. It's looking to be another bountiful year of precious metal harvests. :icon_pirat:

By the way Bryce . Was the coke bottle an old one or ??? Maybe the person who lost the barber dime was chillin out with his girl friend drinking a coke, then dropped both while he did a little "making out" ;D

Can't say WOW! loud enough for this one Bryce. Wind chill in the minus 20 somethings and truly hard packed ice on the ground and you go get the job done again! Awesome work!

Thanks H.D. Yep...I do often wonder about the lower hits I walk over....but I'm after deep silver...and injuns...so that's what I concentrate on. I also play the odds...as my hunt time is very limited. My ratio of tabs/good items dug this year was probably 200 tabs to one gold ring. My ratio of coin/junktarget was probably around 50/50.
I looked on the bottom of the coke bottle but there is no name on the bottom...only the numbers 57-20./.whatever that means. ;D Take care buddy.

Now THAT should keep you satisfied for a few weeks!
Hopefully, we'll all get a little mid-January thaw, to keep the cravings in check!
Looks like ALOT of letters on those headbands!
Congrats!
And have a GREAT Holiday!
Thanks BK. Yep...the barbers cleaned up well. I just rubbed a little baking soda and rinsed them in warm water...and they look sweet. I would say all three are at least Fine or better. Take care BK.

Nice job Bryce. Those Barbers are great. How you kept that bottle intact is cool as well. I can picture some dude drinking an old Coke while sitting there dropping coins out of his pocket......Nice digs all the way around, all year for that matter. Congrats and Best Wishes during this time of year that may be tougher for you my friend. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! jgas

Bryce,

I enjoyed your narratives all year long! Thanks for posting! Have a great holiday break. Your nasty Injun comment reminded me of the one I found this week - 1879 that has seen better days. It's even starting to cleave apart - see pics! Congrats on a great year. - Jim

Bryce , You continue to impress ! Multiple Barbers - I am trying to imagine what I would

feel like If dug those, and they all three are in kind condition ( Kind is the grade after sweet ! )

You dug so many Barbers this year, that the value of Barber coins has plummeted ,same with

indian head cents. Your posts are getting more entertaining - almost at the level of a Frodov

post ! I too share your disdain for lower vdi's , but will include more days of tot lots , with

the disc . down for gold - from what I've seen - tot lots are like a mini beach as far as gold

rings are concerned . Bryce thanks again for all your fantastic posts and pics and the

knowledge you share so generously . A very MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and yours !

Argentium.

Thanks bro. I wish I had more time for those lower hits...but I've spent a lot of time training my ears for the silver and injun hits. I'm horrible with nickle hits...so hopefully next year I can take some time to learn those hits better. Congrats on that beautiful ring you found...and that does inspire me to get better acquainted with those lower conductor hits  Take care my friend...and have a nice Christmas. Mine will be a little...no VERY different this year :angel7:
