The Ben Lilly Legend

copyright 1950, J. Frank Dobie

Good story about perhaps the best hounds-man to ever chase Bear and Lion.

I had read a little about Lilly here and there over the years, but was a little disappointed in this account.

Dobie gathered some of Lilly's diaries, and part of a book that Lilly himself had started, but most of the stories were generalizations, without much detail.

For someone that killed many animals with a knife only, I expected a little more action.

Still a decent read, but I feel it could have been much better.

In Mer Rouge, LA there is a statue of Ben in front of the post office. Even when I was a kid growing up in Morehouse Parish all of the old timers still talked of Ben. It is said he could stand inside a 55 gallon barrel and jump out of it without using his hands and none of his body would touch the barrel. He was a legend
