The Bog man

Managed about 2 hours very late this aft. before the heavens opened. I detected a field that I last tried about 4 years ago. The field is very low laying and I think was once a bog before it was drained. From experience I knew signals would be in short supply, and I was correct. After about 2 hours with nothing of interest to show the sky became inky black with rain clouds. I headed back towards the car and that's when the bog man decided to show his lead face to me. He looks very medieval with a big round collar like the ones the kings have on short cross 12th/13th century coins.

Thank's for the picture, yes the good old British empire things were much simpler then. What's "stink eye" mean old boy "not a lot of people know that". Must go now, having trouble with a septic tank. Ta Ta.

Roger you you could be right about the snake for hair (well spotted), perhaps it's meant to be St Patrick who was said to have banished snakes from Ireland. Maybe it's a pilgrims badge ?.

Here's a slightly better picture of the Bog Man. You can see the snakes head on the l/h side of his head. Went back to the bog field today and found nothing of note.

Apparently the design of the serpent has close similarities of the Teutonic creator god,who formed part of the pre-Christian religion of the Angles who settled in Yorkshire and Northumbria. The face may represent the god of chaos and creativity. The find may date to the 7TH/8TH Century. The oldest sundial in England on Escomb Saxon church dating to the 7TH/8TH Century as a similar design.
