hi everyone, I went to a place Husstlers Terrace yesterday. This is a junction of 3 roads about 5 minute drive from my place. This hotel was built in 1873 and called The Boundry Hotel and on other side of the road is a mansion called The Husstlers Terrace.the mansion was also built in 1873 by John Emmet. John Emmet owned a gold mine behind the hotel, some 50 yards away. The gold mine had few different owners and names, but is best known and The Husstlers Extended .The main shaft was 2700 feet deep and produced 198,000 ozs of gold from 1861-1915.Under these buildings runs a saddle Quartz gold reef called husstlers.First mined in 1851 by Ben Harris [american].i couldnot get premission to hunt the mansion or the hotel site but there is plenty of public land around this site to hunt. There are lots of these sort of disused sites scattered all over the place. These sites are considered unstable ground and are not suitable to build on.Just left to stand time.Anyway i sent most of yesterday just loaming and picking the areas with the least amount of ground trash, left by others over the years :( :( :(I had a mixed day but found a couple of interesting relics and 2 silver coins aussie shilling 1907, aussie sixpence 1904.There heaps of pics of the whole place and finds.thanks for looking

Wow Tinpan! Very nice post as always, too bad you couldnt get permission to hunt the mansion & hotel. I can just imagine what you might find buried in the hotel lawn, but I expect that you will pull up some nice goodies on the outskirts! Good luck & keep us posted! ;D

Nice finds and pics!! Is there any tailings from the mine around that can be scanned with your detector? Perhaps some traces of gold might be left in them. HH

Re: THE EAGLE HAS LANDED [BOUNDRY HOTEL +HUSSTLERS MANSION 1873]

hi everyone, the reason i don,t find much gold in the tailings dumps is for a number of reasons. These hardrock deep quartz gold mines used chemical extactration [mercury] to get every bit gold.the mines by 1875 where completely industralised. They steam-driven quartz stamping batteries that smashed the rich ore into find sand.Of all the rock ever mined 4/5 s remained underground and was used as fill into disused shafts. The other heaps of tailings where the left over from grading ore and had little or no gold in them. Some of the harder rock called mullock was used as road base and the sand from processing used as brick sand.Even the huge pieces of quartz where crushed and used as path pebbles and drive ways bases. When the mines where no longer used the machinery was often moved to other new mine sites. These sites have tons of scape metal, brass, and copper laying around the place. When in 1925 a lot of the tailing dumps where pushed back down the open shafts to make the area safe or the shafts where capped [mushroom].Then the locals found these sites an easy place to dump their trash too.Yes over the years i have found a few small pieces of gold in the rock and tailing dumps left .About the biggest piece was 1.5 troy gram. That not very big :D :D :D

Fantastic finds and story as usual Tinpan.

Looks to me that you've found yourself a 'griffin' head for a cane - I don't know about the mutant birds you breed down in Victoria but eagles here don't have big ears ;D -

I have to agree with others very much like listening to your stories and posts. That eagle head is sure a mystery.

Congratulations on the finds,

Hi everyone and thanks for the replys.late this afternoon i went back to the site and decided to have a look under the Peppercorn trees that are on the right side of the mine site.A Peppercorn tree is known in the U.S as a California Pepper Tree [Schinus Areira}.These trees where brought to australia during the first gold rush 1851 and grow well in the hard clay ground around here.Theres thousands of them and locals have been dumping rubbish under them for about a 150 years.anyway today i got on my hands and knees and got under the trees. The branches are like that of a willow tree and grow down to the ground. The trees at the mine are large and old and there lots of undergrowth as well. When the wind blows the limbs of these trees brush the ground and sweep away the top soil. After forcing myself right under the tree i noticed this.Surfacing of relics by wind and branch power, now thats different.I took one look and had to take a pic of what was sitting on the ground looking at me.Its hard to get a good pic under a tree with poor light and daylight was fading.i think the pic is going to have to do.Then i just started picking up relics and got 2 coins off the surface.i indeed like this sort of relic hunting no digging. This a couple of firsts for me the first coin is a first mint 1901 penny and its not real good and the second was the 9th american coin i have found here.A silver 5 cent piece [1889] and its got a hole in it.For the record i do swaps with T>N members in the states and this coin is a find and not one of the coins sent to me by A.P or 1320.I don,t e-bay or buy or sell coins.Relic hunter only and a few swaps. Also remembering that there where many of thousands of americans on the Victorian gold fields [1851-1920].Thank for reading and there a pic of the surfacing of relics and what a peppercorn tree is. thanks for reading.
