In one of the small fields i hunt i keep finding some good fire treated pieces and flakes but never a whole one.... I believe if I'd ever be patient and sift I could find a good one... That heat treated chert is all science to me. I wish I knew more about it. They say it made the knapping soft as butter and popped the material in color.

Yeah it's definitely unique, almost looks like a plastic it's so smooth and it makes the colors brighter. Don't know how they did it, must have been a super hot fire!!

coosakid: dig a shallow hole and fill it with uncooked rock, cover it with sand and then build a good fire over it. Walk away and come back in a few days and dig up your cooked rock. ( it is important that is cools on its own covered) and you should see a difference and your cooked rock should knap easier than the raw rock in most cases.

Thanks for the info.... I got some good material I'd like to try that on. I've seen your knapping skills on here before so I know you know what your talking about. Id like to see if I can get it looking like there fire treated rocks

Interesting..... Would this apply to obsidian as well?
