I knew Bert from 1968 when I was lived in Virgin Gorda, BVI. He lived nearby at Mosquito Island, and we ran into each other at Anegada many times.

I knew Bert when he had lived in Treasure Island,,, St. Pete Florida. I know he was trying to get the right to salvage a wreck there off Anagada, I forget the name but it was loaded with Diamonds? I also had the privilege to escort him down to Key West from Treasure Island for Mel Fisher day. He couldnt get around to good but we had some shots at the local pub.

Nice chap Bert, the San Ignacio 1742 - he dived "his site" with Froggie Weller amongst others, it had a promissory note for 50,000 pesos on board that's all, munitions and a governor for Cartagena Columbia it sank so shallow that it rolled on its side and the slaves even made it to shore. Anegada is beautiful a second home to me, but alas no treasure worth going to jail over. The salvage reports indicate not much was left a nice 19 inch mortar which was recovered and sold by someone I know back in the 80`s. It carried feral platina , iron ore stock pigs not Platinum at least you would need to work those pigs like jesus to get the platinum out.... Back to Bert, good friend good guy I don't think he had a bad bone in his body just a pirate living life. Cheers

I met bert and dove with him in 1986. brought home a very old bottle, cannon balls, flints and other junk. we had a ball. met him the next year at our world underwater in chicago. he still remembered me so I was impressed. I got a photo of him and he was nice enough to sign my logbook.

WOW,
You had the privilege to dive with him uno he is in the guiness book for the oldest diver in the world!
Bert's mind was clear when I knew him in 03,04 If you ever get a chance to get to Key Largo/south Miami his ashes are scattered there on the reef. and there is a rememberance plaque.
