The marbles are getting bigger & older, Wheats and Relics, Nickels and more

Got a chance to meet up with McCDig, he shared some info on a field where he has been having lots of luck finding old coins and flat buttons, I only stayed for about an hour, I managed a 1943 War nickel and an old suspender clip. The spot is very promising and hope to go back soon when the weather gets better.

The next finds come from the other park i been hitting lately , once again the wheats and nickels showed up, but not the silver, 12 wheats, 1906 Indian, 1911 V nickel, dateless buff, 1941 Nickel, 1944 War Nickel ( only silver ), A small pin with a heart that im pretty sure is military but not certain. The lead showed up in the form of 2 wounded soldiers that i repaired using crazy glue, a large fishing weight probably from a fishing net. This leads me to the marbles a clay bennington being the oldest, a large shooter with a colorful swirl pattern that sadly is breaking a part, a smaller shooter and finally six regular sized marbles that are as much fun to find as any metal object.

Looks like that mud-caked marble on the lower left is a German hand-made, which would be 1880s to 1920 or so. Nice! The Brown Bennington clay marble is even older- possibly 1870s, but these don't have much value in most cases. I also love that white/brown/black swirl near the upper right. Ca. 1930 on that one- probably Alley Agate company. Any time I find a marble with crust stuck to it, I soak it in CLR (the scale remover you'd use in a toilet!) and it cleans it right up. Now if they've gotten pitted or hazed in the ground, there isn't much you can do, but the crud on the surface does come off. Otherwise, the great thing about marbles is that they don't corrode like coins, and you can use pretty harsh chemicals to clean them with no worries. Nice finds!

All of these were found in the plug, I have found some in the surface in the past.

I known Mike (McCDig) for about a year now, met him at our club, run into each other every now and then but we definitely need to go on a group hunt.

Thank you redden very informative post. I know these marbles are nothing special, but i like them a lot, the old bennington and yes the white/brown/black swirl near the upper right is also my favorite.
