The No Show Queen

On the top of Rich Mt. in Western AR, is a beautiful lodge & State Park, it is named in honor of 'Gueen Wilhelmina' of Holland.
The lodge idea started with Edwin Walters while surveying for the K. C. Pittsburgh & Gulf RR, he noticed the clear sparkling springs, clean mt. air, & beautiful view, so he got the V.P. of the RR intrested, (Arthur Stilwell). The Mt. top had been settled by the 1860's, & had a small community there allready.
During the economic slowdown, (panic of 1893), Stillwell traveled overseas to secure more funding to build a lodge, he got the backing of several wealthy Dutch businessmen, so many towns & eventually the lodge were named for The Dutch Gueen.
They started with a large 'circus tent', then built a stone & timber lodge, complete with two fireplaces, three storys, dining room for 300, with a 'Royal Suite in case the Queen came for a visit', (she never came).
It prospered for three years, fell into disrepair, was used later for homes, a
college, then closed again.
Later, Mena businessmen rebuilt the lodge, only to have it burn in 1973, then the present lodge was built, (Mena is also named for the Gueen), spelling is different, it is in the valley East of the lodge.

It's quite impressive, I have ate there in the dining room a few times, it has a nice 'gift shop', all kinds of booklets about the park & area.
They have a miniature train & animal park for the kids, plus hiking trails , & they host a large 'craft show' each fall, & being a State Park, we couldn't hunt.

I didn't see any Ill-eagles in the pictures ;)

Nice pictures!

Most of the 'Ill-eagles' are in the valleys locally. :P

All kinds of animals, but gotta watch out for bears, lions, & wild Hogs.
back when 'Gensing' was legal to gather, a man i know (who didn't think those little blackbears would bother you), was attacked by a crippled bear, he struck it in the head with his hickory handle & turned it away.
Another time a large one chased him to his truck.
Other people have been 'treed' by them, one man bitten on the heel.
Some bow-hunters had to shoot one that wouldn't let them down from their tree-stand.

I don't know this for sure, but I heard those Arkansas bears are Christians, and they say grace before they eat you, now I don't know that for sure.
I think it would be thoughtful if any TN members go into those woods to play with them teddy bears, take your watch, rings and change and put under about an inch of dirt for some lucky Treasure Hunter to find later on.
As usual those were good pictures and you took us on another great sight seeing trip, thanks. Gnewt

Nice pics. I didn't realize Arkansas was so hilly/mountainous. I have a perception that everything west of the Mississippi is mostly flat until the Rockies. Guess my perception is wrong. It's beautiful out there!

Thanks, the Eastern part is 'Delta country' along the Miss river, lots of rice farming, & other crops, known for its great 'duck hunting' around Stuttgart, (lots of hardwood bottomland), & flooded areas.
The Northwest part has the 'Ozark mts' very much like the 'Smokies in TN', Elk have been reintroduced, along with black bear, famous for hunting, hiking, tourism. then the AR river valley has farming & cattle ranching, grape vineyards, chicken growers, (second to GA).
I live in the Eastern part of OK, the 'Ouachita mts' run eastward into AR, they are mixed hardwoods & pine, the southern part of AR gets flatter.
There have been many plane crashes on this mt over the years.
