It's a major loss NOT to have what you call "plantation economy".

With the loss of many, many agricultural economies, we are at the mercy of whomever we import our melamine - food stuff from.

Of course, we still DO have some very important plantation economies. Think beef, milk, cotton, tobacco, rubber, sugar cane, some fruits and veggies. Without these, we lose a lot. Just like the coal and steel industries. When you wipe out the plantation economies, you wipe out our own personal independence when it comes to products we need and use every day.
