Look for locations of artifacts based on the provenance statement in the item description.
Just thought of this idea, when cruising the auction sites. Perhaps it's been thought of before, and there is probably a better way of processing this data. It may not originate in an area that is conducive for you to search but if you go through as many as possible, you could create regional map sets of historic locations.

That being said, the item would have to have come from the same place as the person in question came from....? + or - a few miles, or states.
Good thought though.
