Today we took our first foray out to an old swimming hole that has been used for as very long time. The bottom is mainly shale so there is not much sand for items to get buried in but we still managed to find some things. We got lots of change, mostly from the 1970's, that for the most part was jammed into a small shale ledge. At first I thought that there must have been a child who was jamming them in but then I realized that in the spring when the water is high, eddies at the base of the ledge would move the coins back underneath. Small pebbles then wedged them in solid.
I got a nice 85 signal through about 8 inches of solid shale (Kudos to the AT Max for that) and after a lot of digging into a small groove with an old square nail that I found, out popped a beautiful silver 1942 George VI quarter. It still has luster and full detail and must have been lost in 1942. What did not get jammed below the ledge must have been washed downstream. That is where we will be heading next.
We also found our first gold of the year, a nice 18" long 14K gold chain.
