they couldn't have hired some local detectorists?

Yes...prayers out to all affected...but we all know if ANY ONE OF US on these forums was employed to find surface brass, we would be digging 10" signals. Ddf

Fired bullets will go into the ground too, so that would be "justified".

I have known for a long time the Sheriff, Chief Deputy and most of the captains in my local County Dept + they know I understand the Chain of Evidence. I have offered to help them anytime and I get a nice pat on the head and am told they have a machine sitting in a closet somewhere if they ever need one.

I also have a close relative that is a senior game warden locally who I have offered to help teach him his machine (Whites DFX) so the first time he uses it, he wont have to study the manual via flashlight. Same response, tho he was interested in the concept of a pinpointer for locating poacher bullets in carcasses.

Horse to water, and all that.....

"Perhaps we should check the field across the street where people use to gather in the 1800's -- I mean where some bullets might have landed."

I will grab that bullet casing of the surface, after I dig that super deep iffy silver signal!

Another horrific, sad day in our history, unfortunately in the past 15 years or so these days have been occurring more often than ever. I wish there was just a way to automatically rid the world of all the evil sickos so things like this wouldn't happen anymore.
