I think this has been covered before but it fits in with culvert mining.
It is simple, you need to find where they dump the sweepings from a big shopping center in a spot you can get at them. A lot of them I have found that have their own sweepers dumps the dirt behind the store on vacant lot. I find dozens of them that are accessible. Winter in snow country is great too! I use a short handled hoe with a super magnet on the back of the blade to knock the pile flat to metal detect, the same as detecting a drywasher tailing's pile, it pulls out the iron items. Items I have found: Coins ( of course) loose diamonds and other setting from jewelry, rings including some very good ones, ear rings, loose Turquoise ( don't ask me ?) gold and silver scrap including gold dental fillings ?? and hundreds of other things, Wear rubber gloves some of it is really gross but for an old waste water plant operator like me its nothing! Try it you might like it.
