Thought I'd try last year's cornfield.

Just felt like wandering in a great big open field today. :)

For those who remember, this cornfield was my first one. Somehow, in all those years, I just never had tried one.
So, I am a veritable newbie when it comes to hunting farm fields. :dontknow:

Had a pleasant surprise this year. They, somehow, almost leveled the ground. (I still have nightmares of stumbling around those cornstalks!!!)

They may have disked, I don't know. Anyway, it was a LOT easier walking. Still not a lot of finds but interesting and a nice day out.

Here's the take:

I can always count on a wide variety of ammo here. :)

Image312.jpg

Probably off a doorknob.

Image315.jpg Image316.jpg

Some sort of wedge. Iron. Maybe a chisel, wedge for wood/door, baby hatchet? :dontknow:

Image317.jpg
1955 and toasty.

Image318.jpg Image319.jpg Image321.jpg

And, as always, the whatzitz.
Maybe lead solder? Strange shape. Looks like a broken off point to something. :dontknow:

Anyway, nice day.

Thanks for peeking!

Nice finds. :) the pointy thing is a broken piece of an old wheel weight ( I assume it is lead) complete piece would have been 2oz.

Wheel weight? You mean like a balancing lead they use to balance tires? :icon_scratch:

Good eye David. I see it now too. It's just missing the steel that holds it on the wheel.

First thing I thought was wheel weight too. Looks like you found better stuff than I did yesterday morning. All I got for hunting in the cold and light snow was a pouch full of beer can slaw. I don't know which is scarier, the thought of farmers driving multi-ton pieces of farm equipment drunk or a hunter carrying around a loaded weapon while drunk. Looks like your fields get a lot of hunting too. Congrats.

I can just see a farmer riding with his buddy, in one of those super machines and he turns to his buddy and says, "Hey! Hold my beer and watch this!" LOL

About the hunting? No, I don't think so. Not for many, many years. It's a wide open field and it's pretty much in a heavily populated area. Too many houses, roads around.

Must've been quite the hunting grounds at one time though. I find all sorts of ammo here. Even found the barrel to a boot pistol. I suspect the ammo is pretty old.

Thanks!

That piece of iron looks old. I have found axe heads and splitting wedges in farm fields that were wooded areas at one time. One area was clear cut in the 1860s-70's. Interesting finds!

Thanks, Helix. I am kinda curious about this wedge. It doesn't seem broken off to me. But it is awful small. Too small to split much wood, I would think.

Maybe some sort of chisel or a wedge to hold space on something? Tighten up something? :dontknow:

Too sharp an angle to be a tomahawk head. :dontknow:

It could be a wedge used to tighten an ax handle or one of the old hoes with the hole through the blade.

Personally, I find detecting fields very relaxing!
But there's nothing more satisfying then walking away with a couple of keepers! :occasion14:

Nice bullet finds too,
Dave
