Metal Detecting
Got to the farm site this AM and detected for four hours with John. He got all the coins today and a couple relics. I had a harder time getting over the good targets. We were both in the same field and I decided to walk a line from where I was to the corner of the field. Before too long I got a strong mid-tone in the 50s (Fisher F75) and really thought it would be a shallow target, perhaps foil, but it turned out to be deep, which in this field is a good sign. Turned out to be 5 inches down and a curious find because it was green on one side and somewhat silvered on the other. I discovered that this is a button and that it has an unusual back mark of an eagle, banner, flower and ribbon. The eagle is an early American version.
Thanks to a post to TreasureNet from last year and the research of Tice, this is identified as a "transitional" button, perhaps dating as early as the 1790s. I included a link to the post from January 2016, a picture from Tice's book, a picture of the button I dug, and a link to the video recording the dig.
Thanks for checking out this find!

The "in the 50's" target looks nice!

Neat button!

WOW... You can dig trash, slaw, pull tabs all day. After eight hours and you pop something like that out of the ground. It makes it all worth while plus some. Your going to get a big-O congrats from me Mister.

That is a sweet button, nice save.

Thx for the "Big-O" congrats! I could have walked away after digging it.

Thx Treb! Most buttons I've dug from this site have been late 1700s to mid 1800s; this one fell right in-line.

Thx cjon455! I would have been lost on this one were it not for TreasureNet and Mr. Tice.

Thx Geochem! I think I was always going to dig this target but I had my doubts. I think its size was behind the loud signal and maybe because my sensitivity was at 93 and volume at max.

Thx weregolf! Writing on scroll reads "SOLID PLATED"; couldn't read it in the field and mistook it for maker's name.
