Owego, Nichols and Spencer are all fairly old towns in Tioga Cty. Did you have some specifics on "what to expect"?

Fairly rainy, temperatures in the spring will go from freezing to 70º with the wind prevailing from the west. Mixed hardwoods, predominately maple, oak and ash with plenty of hemlock and white pine thrown in and dominate in spots. Mosquitoes don't get bothersome until mid summer.

Small villages, lots of farmland, several good sized rivers and streams. Native brook trout in both the East and West Branches of Owego Creek. Hotels in Owego. Treadway Inn has a good but pricey restaurant.

Soil is glacial silt with hardpan at about 8" in untilled areas. Slight mineralization. Fossils are old as the glaciers stripped the terrain several times so most soils are newer that 60,000 years and the shale/bedrock is 350 million years old just beneath that.

Most "white" settlement occurred after the Treaty of Stanwix enforced by King George was invalidated by the Revolution. Early land grants to AWI soldiers put spot settlements all throughout the Susquehanna Valley throughout the county. Most villages were incorporated in the early 1800's.

Hops was a big cash crop in the area at one time. The Franklin auto (Jack Benny's ride) was built in Owego.

Girls are stocky but not unattractive and the men are somewhat agrarian but cordial. Bring shiny beads.
