I heard a rumor that tires can be recycled for treasure/cash. I'm out west. Any truth to this rumor?

Here in Louisiana they charge you $2 a tire when you get new ones even if you take your old ones home.

I've heard somewhere up here in the U.P. that if you bring in a steel rim they will take 5 tires ? haven't wanted anything to do with tires just for the fact no way to get rid of them.
