Toasted Old Copper

Hello all!

I had the opportunity to hunt a 1700 colonial home today... and dug this copper at 3"

I can make out the head facing left and ribbons coming off the back of his head... the face looks like the early 1700's America Rosa coins...

(the coin is about or 1mm smaller than an 1800's American Large Cent...)

Its toasted :-(

I did get 7 wheat pennies... 1930's and 40's... one 1935 Merc Dime... and a strange piece...

This is the same size and thickness as a the wheat pennies.... but smooth...

The only Copper I can find with bust facing right and the word
"GRATIA" written to the right, is a Charles II Irish halfpenny
minted 1680-1684.
But I'm just a maryland Civil War Relic Hunter, What do I know?

Either a Woods Hibernia Halfpenny, or Rosa Americana Halfpenny.

Match the size, and the position of the word Gratia which you can see most of on your coin, and between the two you should be able to confirm ID.

About time your replied, I wembled on this one for a bit, and just don't know, going by what the size given, it is too big to be the Rosa Americana Halfpenny and my pictured Rosa Americana Penny does not have the word GRATIA there, so then we go to Woods Hibernia Halfpenny, which I have one also and that has GRATIA in the right place, But, darn, the bust just is not right nor the reverse looks more like a Americana possible design than the Hibernia........ So, my answer is (Really need more information to say for sure, like exact diameter in millimeters and weight might help but more so the diameter....

The problem below is your Woods coin, it is the one with a bust that does not look like either the Woods or Rosa. Think the corrosion and angle is making it look different, but it's not. (as far as the style of the bust)

PS... I had a Rosa HP about a year ago and would have thought it was bigger than the woods, but impossible to say from memory.

I think we have it nailed... looking in the Red Book my first instincts were right...

The Letters "RO" are clear under the magifying glass on the back ... It all points at the:

1722 Rosa Americana Half Penny

A Rosa is a good find. I have a decent (for dug) 1722 Twopence.

Congratulations on a very old find!
That coin looks more like it was nuked than just toasted.
Any possibility of cleaning it a little? Or would you lose
everything. It's up to you but if I had a coin like that I
would see if any of the detail is salvageable. Not much
to show the way way it is.
Anyway, I'd continue hunting that site to see if you can
come up with her good looking sister.
