It's a shame that a lot of nickels look like hell after being in the ground. They're my favorite denomination. Grats on the find.

I find a lot of V nickels and many are like yours. My shield nickels are even worse. Every once in a while one comes out "decent" like the one I found Saturday, but most are horrible. Here's Saturday's "decent" v nickel.

my first was a 1907 this year ( yeppers, yours is worse) but only slightly

Nice find. I have only dug 1 shield and 1 V and both are toasty, why do these nicled get toasty in most areas?

I was thinking about planting a few Brand new nickels to be found by future detectorists. Any ideas on how to preserve them? What if they were dipped in some sort of liquid plastic?

Yep, old nickels are usually pretty sad looking, but they still look better than new zincolns!
